Making forest-connected supply chains transparent

Making forest-connected supply chains transparent

World Forest ID is an independent non-profit building scientific evidence of product origin. Working with local partners around the world, we develop the reference data and tools needed to scrutinise sourcing claims, support environmental enforcement and make global supply chains more accountable.

How origin testing works

How origin testing works

Product sample

Testing requires a product sample suitable for chemical analysis, a declared harvest origin and sufficient reference data to assess the claim.

Chemical analysis

The sample is analysed using standardised laboratory methods. Its chemical measurements are uploaded to World Forest ID's Evaluation Platform.

Origin evaluation

The platform uses reference data and spatial models to assess the claimed origin, generating a report with its findings and limitations.

41%

41%

of birch products tested had incorrectly declared harvest origins.

Origin claims under scrutiny

Our independent testing revealed incorrect harvest-origin claims in 41% of selected birch products, including certified timber. The findings expose significant gaps in conventional due diligence, raising concerns about sanctions exposure, supply-chain integrity and the ability to distinguish legitimate sourcing from potential misrepresentation.

Built through collaboration

Built through collaboration

Building reliable origin evidence across the world is beyond the reach of any single organisation. Our supporters and partners bring together funding, local knowledge, scientific expertise and practical experience to develop shared reference data and put it to use.
